South African Bobotie Recipe

Ingredients:

For the meat:

    1.5 lbs ground beef

    1 onion, chopped

    1 clove garlic, minced

    1 tablespoon olive oil

    1 teaspoon curry powder

    1 teaspoon ground coriander

    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

    1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

    salt and pepper to taste

 

For the egg topping:

    2 eggs

    1 cup milk

    1/2 cup bread crumbs

    1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese

    1 tablespoon chutney (optional)

 

Other:

    2 tablespoons butter

    1 tablespoon olive oil

    1 bay leaf

    1/2 cup raisins

    1/2 cup almonds, roughly chopped

 

Instructions:

    Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

    Heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Sauté the onion and garlic until translucent.

    Add the ground beef and cook until browned.

    Sprinkle with curry powder, coriander, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and cook for a few more minutes.

    In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, breadcrumbs, cheddar cheese, and chutney (if using).

    Grease a baking dish and sprinkle with half of the breadcrumbs.

    Pour the meat mixture into the baking dish and smooth it out evenly.

    Pour the egg topping over the meat.

    Garnish with raisins and almonds.

    Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the egg topping is set.

 

Tips:

    You can use cranberries instead of raisins.

    You can use walnuts instead of almonds.

    The chutney is optional.

    You can serve bobotie with rice or mashed potatoes.
